#863 Diamond Springs GC 9/24/21

Diamond Springs GC, in Hamilton MI, was designed in 2002 by Chris Shumaker and Mike DeVries. This is my 4th DeVries course and along with the Clifton Group (75 courses), these are the two architects whose courses I have played the most rounds of golf on along my golf journey. Coincidentally, I lived on a Clifton course for 11 years and then moved to The Villages where there are almost 700 Clifton holes.

The routing at Diamond Springs is very much the opposite of DeVries fine Greywalls design in Marquette, Michigan. The big issue I had with Greywalls was the most memorable holes and one of the worlds best par 4's (#9), with a Lake Superior view, are on the front nine. Holes #1 and #2 are both potential round wreckers while #10 is the widest FW on the course, number #18 is one of the easiest par 5 holes (should be a long par 4) I have ever played. In my younger days I would hit driver and PW into this tumbling, downhill, finishing hole. The only positive thing I can say is one time I eagled it to shoot 69. The Solution, flip the 9's to make the Greywalls experience even more enjoyable and memorable!

At Diamond Springs you start out with a nice handshake and then have a few interesting holes on the front nine. My favorites are #2, the #5 green which I 3-putted, and #9 which gives you a preview as to what is to come on the back. Starting on the 14th this is one of the most memorable finishing stretches I have played as the ravine/creek is brought back into play. #14 is a short one shot hole with a deep, narrow green along the ravine. I love short 4's and #15 brings in all the risk you want to ever bite off. 10 years ago I would have gone for it but today I layed up with a hybrid and made par. The 3 shot #16 is by far the best 5 at DS, a serpentine type hole that brings you back to the edge of the ravine. Probably not a good idea to try and go for this one in two. #17 is the longest par 3 which again brings the ravine in play to a huge green. I like a strong finishing hole that has a good amount of risk/reward. The 18th here, with your approach bringing the ravine into play, is what I needed to leave Diamond Springs with memories of these last 5 holes that will last a life time. Blue rated.

These last two courses are some of the best valued rounds you will ever play. Langford and DeVries, two of my favorite architects, for under $40! If you play the 36 hole Marquette GC you can experience both of them for under $200.

#862- Harrison Hills GC 9/23/21

William Langford, in 1924, designed the original 9 holes here in Attica, Indiana. In 1995 Tim Liddy restored and added another 10 holes (#3-12), the original #3 was eliminated. I am a big fan of Langford designs with his elevated greens and deep bunkers. This parcel, with the exception of #5-7, is a great piece of land with lots of rolls. Liddy's stretch from #8-12 is a nice run of holes. He sculpted two par 4's around a small pond to produce a difficult, long #10 and then the easy short four #11 coming back.The uphill 195 yd #12 is a challenge. All the 3's here are real good.

I really like all the remaining 8 Langford holes with #15 one of the best 4's you will ever play. If you are ever within a 100 miles this is a course you want to experience. Conditions are very good and the variety of holes will keep your attention. At $38 with cart this is a steal. Blue+

#861 John James Audubon (9) 9/20/21

After returning from Oregon I took 36 hours to repack and head north in my vintage SUV to the Midwest. My second day I didn't have time for 18 so I searched for a low priced 9 hole track. I was very fortunate to come across this Larry Packard, 1973 design, in Henderson, KY for $12.50 with cart. Little did I know that it had a wonderful museum about John James Audubon adjacent to the course which is free to Seniors on Mondays. There is a theater that you can view two different presentations about Audubons interesting life. His intricate drawings of wildlife was the result of him killing all the wildlife and returning to his study and closely examining them.

The course is owned/operated by the State Park system and is well maintained. Every hole with the exception of the two fine par 3's has lots of elevation change. You will definitely want to take a cart here. This was a very enyoyable afternoon and I had the course to myself. Cabins are available to rent if you need accomodations. Gold rated.

Pacific Dunes revisited 9/15/21

Nestled along the Pacific Ocean in Oregon BDR is my favorite golf resort in the world, followed by St. Andrews. This was my 4th trip here and my 10th round played on the True links Pacfic Dunes course. The variety that Tom Doak created on Pacific is what makes me coming back. Three great ocean holes here at #4, #11 and #13 along with many very interesting others. There is not one hole that I dislike and it is one of the funniest courses you will ever play. Conditions are always superb on all the courses, which play firm and fast. If I only had one course to play, this is it.

#860-Bandon Preserve & Punchbowl 9/15/21

Located between the Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails courses is one of the finest short courses you will ever play. These 13 True Links holes were designed by Coore/Crenshaw in 2012. It is very popular now for resorts to build short courses by famous architects to add to the days enjoyment. This is by far the most FUN and spectacular, with its view of the Pacific and gusts over 40 mph.
On my previous trips to BDGR I would always do 36 a day but now, at $100 a round, The Preserve makes a nice afternoon compliment to playing one of the other championship courses at BDGR. The free 36 hole Punchbowl putting course, located in front of the Pacific Dunes restaurant, will fill another couple of hours of your day.

#859 Sheep Ranch 9/14/21

After 10 years I finally made it back to my favorite golf resort, Bandon Dunes (BDGR). Since my last visit they have added a putting course, a short course and the Sheep Ranch. On my previous three trips here I had tried to get on the original Sheep Ranch short course, but for various reasons never made it. There are eight greens that bring the Pacific ocean into play, which are more than Bandon and Pacific Dunes courses combined. Holes #6 and #16 (my favorite shot) you must play your tee shot over the beach below. Coore and Crenshaw did an excellent job of routing on this small parcel which plays 6636 yards, par 72, from the tips.

With the strong winds coming off the ocean one of the issues has been keeping sand in the bunkers. The resort would water the bunkers to help hold the sand in them. They solved that problem by having only grass bunkers here. The par three #3 and #16 share a huge double green that ends on the edge of the ocean. I played two rounds at the TRUE LINKS Sheep Ranch on this trip and it is the most player friendly with the best ocean views of all the five championsip courses. Black** rated.

2021 Fall Golf Trip

My first really big trip since 2019. I flew out to Bandon for four days and when I returned hopped in my SUV and drove north for three weeks. Besides golf I took in a couple of Michigan football game victories. Great month!! Be on the watch for 2,000 new photo's.

#857 Gamble Sands 7/15/21

Gamble Sands is the 4th David McLay Kidd course I have played. The St Andrews Castle Course I had NO fun at all and Bandon Dunes was pretty good but my least favorite of the 5 courses there. I played Mammouth Dunes a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Gamble Sands is a similar design with firm/fast conditions, generous FW's and large undulating greens. It appears he has changed his philosophy to a more playable, fun experience which I am all for at my age.

As mentioned before, the weather was sizzling hot and the fires produced alot of smoke when I arrived the morning of my round. Luckly the winds shifted and I had a great day of golf. I had planned to play the Quicksands Short course in the PM but the heat would have killed me having to walk it. I also had Wine Valley on my list for this trip, but it would have been a PM tee time and having already suffered the heat at Circling Raven I bowed out. I love short par 4's and Kidd gives you three here. #2 overlooking the Columbia River is one of the best I have played with all kinds of options. I took the direct line and watched my 3 wood drive slowly funnel into the front bunker, I was able to get up and down for a birdie. 5-7 is a wonderful stretch of holes as are holes 14 and 16. I have played several exeptional courses in Washington, Gamble Sands is a close second for me to Chambers Bay. Black rated

#856 Alta Lake Golf Resort 7/14/21

Heading 2 1/2 hours West of Spokane is this beautiful region near Brewster where the mountains and Columbia River meet. The prolonged drought and record heat had dried all the vegatation out and several fires had broken out on the way over. Alta Lake is located a few miles north of the town with a beautiful 18 hole setting on the edge of the mountain. There is a nice hotel on site with pool and the F9 is surrounded by several really nice cabins. The B9 I enjoyed much more as it is a lot more wide open with a better variety of holes. The course was designed in 1976 by Dan Barth who created many tiered greens. I liked 1, 3, 6, 8, and 9 on the front, the uphill Par3 6th with the beautiful mountain backdrop was my favorite. The B9 starts out with a Par5 that feels a bit squeezed due to real estate development but after that it is wide open with many nice holes (11-15) culminating in two great uphill fininshing holes. If you came here because of golf at Gamble Sands, have some extra time, and need resonable lodging be sure and check it out. GOLD rated

#855-Circling Raven GC 7/13/21

In 2021 the NW has had a long, hot, dryspell which I had hoped would have abated by the time I arrived. I had an afternoon tee time and it was cooking, today I couldn't drink enough liquids. But as they say out here it was a "dry heat". Circling Raven is #6 ranked in Idaho and the #19 Casino course in the US. You will see no homes on this 600 accre parcel nor come close to ever slicing one into another FW. In 2003, Gene Bates designed a nice array of interesting holes here in Worley, Idaho. The #4 split FW par 4 was my favorite. Visually of the tee it didn't appear there was much room right off the waste area for your drive, but as always I took the riskiest option. I don't come to play a course once and lay up. Risk equals fun. The short par 4 #10 was another hole that gives you a good dose of risk/reward. The most photogenic hole was the par 4 #15. with the mountains in the back drop. Blue

July Golf trip 7/12-7/16

Heading to Spokane area to visit some old college classmates. I hardly ever go on a trip without making sure there are a few quality courses to play. Here are my minimum plans:

#854-Pine Needles Lodge and GC 6/24/21

The final round of my six course Carolina tour ended with the weeks best weather and an enjoyble foursome to play with. Pine Needles will host the 2022 US Womens Open, having previously had it in 1996, 2001, and 2007. Donald Ross designed the course in 1927, with restoration in 2005 and 2018. It is ranked #11 in NC and the #63 Public in the US. With the Open coming in a year the USGA has already got it in top shape. Generous FW's with undulating Ross greens made for a great day of golf. I have stayed at many nice golf resorts (Slieve Donard at RCD, Spanish Bay at Pebble) but the room (#154) I had overlooking the Pine Needles range is one of the nicest ever. In 1953 the Peggy Kirk Bell family, Frank Cosgrove , and Julius Boros purchased the course. Julius was the Pro across the street at Mid Pines starting in 1950. Julius won 3 majors(2 US Opens and PGA at age 47 in 1968) plus 18 times on tour. He won the Buick Open in 1963 and 1967. In the early 60's he would come to the Montgomery Ward's garden shop in the South Flint Plaza and I just happened to be riding my bike by that day and got to watch his chipping exhibition into a range basket. He was the first pro that I ever met and how lucky I was to follow his career and try to emulate his smooth, effortless, swing. He had the best tempo on tour and never wasted any time over a shot or putt. "Swing easy, hit Hard" was his motto. When people compliment me on my swing and not standing over a shot more than a few seconds, I tell them about the great HOF golfer Juluis Boros. Blue+ rated

#853-The Cradle (9) & Thistle Dhu Putting Course at Pinehurst 6/23/21

I've played many Short and Putting courses around the world but none as busy as this 2017 Gil Hanse design. You got 8somes of players relaxing after the days round and families with the kids having fun listening to the music. This is a wonderful use of this parcel and an excellent way to grow the game of golf. The Cradle costs $50 for an all day pass. If your are ambitious you could get in 432 holes, like the daily record holder. It took me about 45 minutes to get around so you could play 144 holes easy if you had nothing else to do. I had already played 18 so one walking loop was all my foot could tolerate. The Thistle Dhu was lots of fun with some of the most impossible pin placements. The only way to get some putts close was to make it, if not you ended up a long ways away. If in the Pinehurst area and have a few hours stop by and tour the history in the clubhouse, play The Cradle, and sharpen your putting game on Thistle Dhu. GOLD rated.

#852-Tobacco Road GC 6/22/2021

Mike Strantz's, 1998 design, at Tobacco Road is the wildest layout of all his courses I've now played (5 out of 7). It is rated as high as #52 in Public Courses in the US, #8 in NC. It would be a golf supt nightmare to maintain it with all the sand and bunkers. If you love blindshots, risk/reward, heroic shots, massive greens with lots of undulations, and the genius of Strantz who puts so much detail into each hole, this is your nirvana. I've played several FUN courses,(Cruden Bay, NBerwick, Prestwick, Greywalls) but this tops all of them. Don't expect to shoot low here, just enjoy the experience and excitement. Every hole was unique and memorable with #1,5,6,9,11,13,14,16,18 exceptional. A course when you walk off you are already planning the next time you can play it. God willing I will be back again. Black++ rating.

#851-True Blue GC 6/21/21

True Blue GC was designed in 1998 by Mike Strantz and is located across the street from Caledonia on Pawleys Island. It rained about 5" overnight and when we arrived at the first tee the starter elicted the three words I despise "Cart path only". I was dealing with a foot injury and had to decide if I wanted to just aim for the cart paths or drop near them instead of hitting The Big Dog. Unfortunately, The Big Dog has become a puppy and presently isn't flying very far. Strantz came out of the box at True Blue with many interesting holes, lots of risk/reward doglegs, and a bolder design than next door. It is only ranked #28 in SC by Top100golfcourses.com , which I feel is way underated. He always pays lots of attention to his par 3 designs and #14 is one of his best. With all the expansive sand on this hole , I found the tiny pot bunker. As usual Strantz finishes with a strong #18, right in front of the clubhouse so everyone can admire or chuckle at your apporaoch over water. It is a toss up of which Strantz course I would want to play first here, probably True Blue. Blue rated.

#850-Caledonia Golf & Fish Club 6/20/21

My first golf trip in several months takes me to Pawleys Island and the Pinehurst area for six rounds. I dodged a TS for the first three days and got to enjoy three more Mike Strantz courses. This 1994 Strantz design on Pawleys Isalnd, was his first, and is more sedate and traditional due to the low country flat terrain than his other top courses. No blind shots at Caledonia but after the opening three holes a challenging test with generous fairways. I shot my lowest score of the trip here. 9th ranked in SC and #65 in US public courses. Blue

Google Blog changes

Google has made internal changes that my low tech mind has no comprehension of how to deal with. Until I can find a tech person to explain it (probably not for a few months) I am going to make a couple of changes.

Why are they always changing things that work perfectly?? All courses played before this date (#850) can still be viewed by clicking on the Slideshow header.

From this point forward everytime I play a new course and photograph it, I will post the pictures link right here on the main page not on SLIDESHOWS header. All the other spots I added that course like (Recent Course Photo's) on the blog in the past will not be used.

A Golfer's Dream- Pat Keeney

Approaching the golf course the other day

It was a crisp morn that beckoned me to play.

I cleaned my ball and put on my glove,

Preparing myself for the sport I love.

Confidently, I addressed my ball on the tee

As my swing aroused a new found energy.

My tiny white ball sailed thru the friendly skies,

As a graceful dancer before my anxious eyes.

For a brief moment the ball was out of sight,

Lost in the clouds and a little to the right?

As the dewy anointed grass greeted my ball

It was straight down the fairway after all!

Ah, the position was perfect to approach the green,

And my wedge shot was the prettiest I've ever seen.

When with only one putt my ball found the hole

The birdie I recorded gladdened my soul.

It took me by surprise and I'm sure you will agree,

When my husband awoke me, I did so reluctantly!
